National Library Week
National Library Week is a national observance
sponsored by the American Library Association
(ALA) and libraries across the country each
April. It is a time to celebrate the
contributions of our nation's libraries and
librarians and to promote library use and
support. National Library Week will be
observed April 13-19, 2008 with the theme, "Join
the circle of knowledge @ your library®." To
celebrate, all library obligations will be 1/2
off during this week.
Extended until Friday, April 25th.
New Cafeteria identiMetrics
Program
We will be using identiMetrics' identiFi™
program in our cafeteria beginning on April
16th. This is a fingerprinting software that
identifies each child or adult who eats by their
fingerprint. The program eliminates the cost and
administration of issuing and replacing lost,
stolen or forgotten student ID cards.
Student privacy is ensured because the actual
fingerprint is never stored. A biometric
fingerprint reader quickly scans the fingerprint
as the students move through the lunch line. The
scanning process takes less than a second to
complete and a student can be enrolled into the
system in about 10 seconds. The program doesn’t
take an actual fingerprint, just unique
identifying points. The actual fingerprints are
not stored in the school's system and will not
provide any personal data about the students.
Fingerprints cannot be reconstructed from the
stored template.
3 hour early
dismissal
Students will be dismissed 3 hours early on
Tuesday, April 29th in order for schools to
conduct training and preparation for
administering the WESTEST.
School access safety plan
Scott High School will be receiving equipment
for video entry surveillance. This will allow
school officials an opportunity to check a
visitor's identity before granting or denying
entry.
New Version of WesTest
WV has adopted the NAEP test as our
accountability test beginning next year. This
test is much more rigorous than the WESTEST.
Healthy Beverage & Snacks
The State Board of Education wants all schools
to be free of sugared snacks and soda ASAP. We
will be removing the pop machines and they will
be replaced with water and 100% fruit juice
machines.
Scott High School teachers selected for WVDE

Two Scott High School teachers, Jackie Aleshire
in Science and Cindy Allred in Social Studies,
have been selected to serve on the WV Department

Scott High School named a SCHOOL OF
EXCELLENCE!
Scott High
School was notified May 24, 2007, by the State
Superintendent of Schools that our school
attained "School of Excellence" status. We are
considered a model for other schools throughout
the state. Schools of Excellence for 21st
Century Learning are selected based on the
following criteria: a rigorous and challenging
curriculum, a safe and drug-free learning
environment, participatory leadership, active
teaching and learning, an environment that
strengthens teacher skills, documented student
achievement and implementing advanced and
innovated programs. Scott High School was one of
only two high schools in West Virginia to
achieve this status.
Congratulations
to Cynthia Allred, Boone County Teacher of the
Year!
Scott High
School is proud to have one of its own named as
Boone County Teacher of the Year.
Congratulations to Cynthia Allred on receiving
this
well-deserved honor.
New Online Tool
Simplifies Financial Aid Process
The new online tool to help students and
families prepare financially for college before
a student's senior year of high school is now
available. It is called FAFSA4caster
and it provides high school juniors with an
early estimate of their eligibility for federal
financial aid. The FAFSA4caster
allows for an easy transition to FAFSA on the
Web, the online version of the federal
application. The FAFSA4caster is
available in both English and Spanish at
http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/.
Dress
Code
Scott High School follows the Boone
County Dress Code policy, listed in the
Parent-Student Handbook. Inappropriate
clothing includes:
*Shorts and skirts that are above mid-thigh
*Spaghetti-strap shirts
*Tank tops with less than 2"
straps (including undershirts)
*Clothing with alcohol,
weapons, or vulgar "double meanings"
(the students think we are too old to "get it"!)
*Baggy pants that hang far below the hip
*Holes in pants in an inappropriate area
Students almost always know when they have
crossed the line! Please encourage your
kids to dress appropriately for school.
